EAA Chapter 20 sponsors the Young Aviators Plane Building Program, which introduces high-school students to hands-on aviation through the build of an actual aircraft. Its first aircraft, a Van's RV-12, took flight in September 2020. The next project will start with the tail kit and is in the active planning stage now. We welcome new participants.
• Build an aircraft with a group of students and mentors:If you're interested in being an adult mentor or a student participant for the next build project, contact firstname.lastname@example.org or fill out this Google form. No experience is necessary, but we are in need members with training in sheet metal construction, electrical systems, and wiring. Build sessions are Saturday 9 am to noon, and Monday 4 pm to 8 pm.
• Join the equity flying club: Due to EAA policy, Chapter 20 cannot own or operate the plane once it's complete. The "Flying 12" equity club owns the first RV-12, and has two open ownership slots. Contact Bill Warner (email@example.com) for information.
• Thank our supporters: Chapter 20 members serve as project mentors for the students. Chapter 20 purchased the Van's RV-12 kits, and chapter members donated many of the tools.
San Carlos Airport provides dedicated hangar space in hangar A45s for this educational program.
• Expanded mission statement:Young Aviators aims at unleashing and supporting students' passion for aviation and aerospace. They accomplish this through events, mentoring, and programs, such as the airplane build project, the online talk series, and ground crew volunteering at Young Eagles events. To build a community, they also facilitate networking with like-minded students, pilots, and other aviation and aerospace professionals.
