Young Aviators

Young Aviators Program

Program Nurtures Students' Interest in Aviation

The EAA 20 Young Aviators program seeks to spark and nurture students' interest in aviation. Young Aviators sponsor a twice-monthly talk series (all ages, see home page for talk schedule) and a plane building program. This ambitious, hands-on program teams up mentors and students ages 15 to 21 who together build an actual aircraft, a Van's RV-12. Skills learned range from STEM concepts and safety standards, to teamwork and meticulous organization. The chapter's first aircraft, also a Van's RV-12, built by chapter members and high school students, took flight in September 2020.
Join our second RV-12 build team: We're thrilled to announce a project to build a second RV-12, and we've raised enough funds to buy the first of seven kits, the tail kit. This project is in the active planning stage now. We welcome new participants. If you're interested in being a mentor or a student participant, contact youngaviators@eaa20.org or fill out this Google form. No experience is necessary, but we especially need people with training in sheet metal construction, electrical systems, wiring, project management, and QA. Build sessions are on hold due to healthcare guidelines, but we're holding online planning sessions.
• Thank you to our supporters: We are extremely grateful to all the donors who enabled us to purchase the tail kit for the second build. Please click on the PayPal button below if you'd like to donate to the build project. A special thanks to Chapter 20 members who serve as mentors and to San Carlos Airport, which provides dedicated hangar space for this educational program.
• Young Aviators mission statement:Young Aviators aims at unleashing and supporting students' passion for aviation and aerospace. They accomplish this through events, mentoring, and programs, such as the airplane build project, the online talk series, and ground crew volunteering at Young Eagles events. To build a community, they also facilitate networking with like-minded students, pilots, and other aviation and aerospace professionals.

Young Aviators Nurtures Students'
Interest in Aviation

EAA 20 sponsors the Young Aviators program to spark and nurture students' interest in aviation. The three main projects are: a twice-monthly talk series (all ages, see home page for talk schedule), volunteering for Young Eagles events (age 12 or older), and an ambitious plane building program (age 15 and older).

The Young Aviators plane-building program introduces high-school and college-age students to hands-on aviation through the build of an actual aircraft. Skills learned range from STEM concepts and safety standards, to teamwork and meticulous organization. EAA's first aircraft, a Van's RV-12, took flight in September 2020.
• Join the equity flying club: Due to EAA policy, Chapter 20 cannot own or operate the plane once it's complete. The "Flying 12" equity club owns the first RV-12. Contact Bill Warner (billwmenlo@aol.com) for information.
